'To Kill a Mockingbird'

What have i learnt from this play?

I have learnt that everyone should be treated equally. Racism is very unfair. In the play, Tom Robinson was sentenced to death because he was accused of raping a white girl, Mayella. He was still sentenced to death despite having firm proves. It is unfair to Tom Robinson as he is innocent and even after telling the truth, he still have to be punished for something that he didn't do. It is unfair for one to be punished just because they are of a different 'kind'. This also goes to show that people should put themselves in other's shoes. Only then, one will be able to understand how he/she feels.

I have also learnt to look at things from other's point of view. This play teaches me to learn and feel what others might be going through everyday. For example, Jem and Scout dislike Mrs Dubose because she was really rude and loud. She was always reprimanding them for making so much noise. Jem dislike reading for Mrs Dubose. The reason for all this is because Mrs Dubose was in great pain. Not only that, she lives by herself and therefore she is alone or rather, lonely. By making Jem read to her, she will have someone there to actually tend to her and she will also be able to forget about the pain that she is suffering. It serves as a distraction for her. She scolds the children for making noise because she is old and she would love to get some rest and be able to sleep peacefully. Therefore, I learnt to look at other's point of view.

Reflection

What makes me what i am today?

I am what i am today for my parents brought me up this way. I guess I am rather impatient. My father is a person who wants thinks to be done fast and accurately. For me, I am used to doing things fast, though I am bad at accuracy, and if anyone do things slowly, I will get irritated and will have a bad temper.

My mother is what makes me what i am today. She is soft-hearted and kind. Yes, I am soft-hearted in certain ways sometimes. I easily sympathise people for what they do. For example, when i went to Indonesia last year for my holiday, i was eyeing this one small child whom i estimated his age to be 6 or 7. He was the center of attention as I was in a car, at a traffic light junction and he was sitting in the middle of the road, taking a break from giving out newspapers. I felt so sad and sympathise him a lot. For a young kid to do such a thing, it takes a lot of courage. There and then, i kept thinking, what will happen to him if drivers are reckless? Where are his parents? Do they know that he is doing such a thing? Does he even have parents? Is he being well taken care of? Quite a lot of thigns were running through my mind. My mother on the other hand will donate to any disabled people who begs for money. She also can't stand looking at children crying, she'll cry too!

My sister also play an important role in my life. It it weren't for her, i wouldn't be so straightforward. Since I was young, she have taught me to be straightforward. She taught me to speak my mind out. Yes, there will be times she gets scolded from mother for being too straightforward that it appeared to be so rude, but, I get her main idea. She just wanted me to believe in standing up for what's right. She just wanted me to believe that a girl like me, can make a huge difference if I stand up for what I believe and in order to do so, I've to speak my mind out.
